A Child of Byne: An Ux-Blood Novella
A Warden is Always On the Job
In the forty-five years since escaping Earth with his lifemate Meneu and Oladi witch friends, Warden Maels Raptori has established the Guild Guard, an organization dedicated to protecting the covens of the Witches Guild and stamping out witchblood harvests when and where they are found. His efforts have allowed the armies of the three overworlds to turn their attentions to their fight with the Nassara, and are slowly turning the tide in the century-long war.
When a request for help from the Witches Guild coven on Byne, a primitive underworld beneath the Oladi homeworld, reaches Maels, he agrees to travel there and lend what assistance he can. And at first his mission seems simple enough: escort the newly elected leader of the global government from her academy on the far side of her faction’s home continent to the capital city. But soon Maels discovers he’s been deceived. His true mission is to ensure the young president—an eight-year-old girl—never reaches her swearing-in ceremony, and she must be seen to die at his hands. Otherwise, civil war will engulf the three factions on Byne, a world that only recently has emerged from centuries of dark times, where anarchy reigned unchecked. Should such a war happen, the coveness of the coven on Byne has assured Maels he will never leave the primitive underworld.
Warden Maels Raptori finds himself in an impossible situation, with a mere handful of months to discover a way to not only save the life of his young charge, but also preserve the nascent civilization that has pulled itself from its ruinous past. And making matters worse, he soon discovers Byne itself harbors a dark and terrible secret that not only threatens his life, but would spell the end of everything the emerging population has achieved in its efforts to survive…
A Child of Byne: An Ux-Blood Novella pits Warden Maels Raptori against not only the darkest of ambitions of those who wish to claim control of Byne, but the cruelest intentions of outsiders intent on claiming the primitive underworld’s secrets for themselves. At stake is the life of an innocent young girl who’s not only lost her mother in recent days, but must face down forces within her own government that seek her destruction—for the good of her own civilization.
