Earth Cell: The Ux-Blood Trilogy, Book I
A Warden is Always All In…
Maels Raptori, the last of his kind after a plague completely devastates his home world, is in training to become a Warden for the League of Cells, an organization that, along with the Witches Guild, keeps the peace among the many worlds of the overweb. He is encouraged by his adoptive father, Dell, the Cellmaster for Earth Cell, and mentored by the three wardens of the cell. Maels considers serving as a warden an honorable life, and the best way he can leave a legacy as last of the Raptori.
Then a vicious and powerful intruder breaches Earth Cell’s defenses. Maels and a fellow warden on watch make a last stand in defense of their home on Earth. While his fellow warden is gravely wounded, Maels survives, but suffers mental trauma so deep at first he does not realize the extent. A few days later, during a relatively benign mission to a friendly world, hostile cat-like beings kidnap young Sister Larrika, a witch at Earth Cell’s coven, and imprison Maels. Using experimental ux-metal that bends to Maels’s thoughts, the young warden trainee effects his escape and returns to Earth Cell to sound the alarm. But just as he arrives, more of the cat beings swarm the cell using illicit technology.
Suddenly, Maels finds himself the prisoner of the leader of the cat beings, known as the Qrill, and taken to her den on their distant homeworld. A poison in his blood leaves him at the utter mercy of the vicious Saawth, who plans to enjoy Maels as a plaything until she tires of him. Col Prij, crown of the Clan Guard and another of her poisoned captives, tries to convince Maels to surrender to the hopelessness of his situation. For once Saawth is done with Maels, Col Prij plans to train Maels to be his successor.
Alone, struggling with his injuries, and facing overwhelming odds, Maels has only a handful of days to find a way to break the poison’s hold on his very soul and return to an Earth devastated by the Qrill invasion. But even if he does manage to return to the planet he’s sworn to die defending, he stands alone against the might of the invading Qrill. And as his situation grows more dire by the moment, he discovers his enemies are closing in from not only all around him, but also from within his own mind…
